Title:
Promoting Renewable Energy with Virtual Power Plants
Abstract:
With the rapid market uptake of generation from distributed renewable resources (DER), especially solar PV, the power grid is facing increasing challenges to cope with such growth. Issues with voltage, losses, and power quality emerge with the level of DER penetration. This provides market opportunities for battery energy storage systems (BESS) which can be effectively controlled to provide grid support to host more DERs. It can also be managed to provide economic benefits to the consumers especially those who has DER installed at their premises. These group of consumers with generation capacity is also referred to as prosumers. Virtual Power Plant (VPP) provides a platform to monitor and control the generation and storage capacity of such prosumers through different ownership options. In this talk, the energy market rules which provides opportunities for VPP development will be presented, together with methodologies on smart energy management for VPP applications.
